Margaret Balbo

Margaret Mary (Carroll) Balbo, 92, of Manahawkin, New Jersey, passed away on December 28, 2022 from natural causes.

Margie was born on October 14, 1930 to Johnny and Annie Carroll in North Bergen, New Jersey. She attended St. Michael’s High School, graduating in 1948. She started/ran the Pheasant Run book club and craft club for more than a decade. She served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary’s in Barnegat for a few decades. She also volunteered at a Manahawkin nursing home for a handful of years when she first moved south. Circa 1968 she (along with a handful of other mom chaperones) saved the lives of a dozen Cliffside Girl Scouts when their Bear Mountain cabin was destroyed in a midnight fire. She made a mean eggplant Parmesan. She never failed to add new underpants and socks to her children’s Christmas stockings. Marge was an exceptional grandmother to her six grandchildren.

Marge is predeceased by her parents John Carroll and Annie Connaughton Carroll; her loving husband Nicholas A. Balbo; and her siblings Cathleen (Bobbie) Carroll Rush, Edward Carroll, Anna Veronica (Nanny) Carroll Barricella.

She is survived by her children Steve (Debbie Hahner); Laurie (Trevor Liddle); and Jamie. She is grandmother to Nick, Kate, Kane, Conor, Amanda and Aaron. She is great grandmother to Eva and Zoe.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, W. Bay Avenue, Barnegat, NJ on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Barnegat branch of the Ocean County Library, an organization Marge felt strongly about.
