John Scranton

John Robert Scranton, age 82, of Manahawkin, NJ passed away on October 31, 2019 with his family by his side.

A Jersey guy through and through, John was born in Passaic and lived in South Amboy, Teaneck and Parsippany before finally making it to Manahawkin where he resided for the last 20 years. He parlayed his first job as a commercial printer into a teaching position at Essex County Vocational/Technical School in Newark, NJ—they gave him a year to earn his teaching degree so he enrolled in Rutgers University and earned his advanced degree at night. He continued to teach printing and graphic arts for 35 years. Because one job was never enough, he taught night school, coached the high school track team and was the Director and spokesperson for Camp Nejeda, a specialized camp for children with diabetes. He was particularly proud of the work he and his staff did at the camp; that passion led to a feature article in the New York Times and various other press helping put Nejeda on the map forever. But, if you asked him what job he thought was the most fun, he’d tell you, without hesitation, driving coach buses for Leisure Line to Niagara Falls and Atlantic City.

Born a good Catholic boy, after marrying his beloved wife, Joyce, John became a proud Jew. He was mensch-ishly active in Temple Beth Am, Parsippany. John also was a founding member of Congregation Sha-arey Ha Yam, Manahawkin. He served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1956 to 1959, was a member of the Elks Club, Old Bridge, NJ for many years and was the founding den leader of Cub Scout Troop 65. But, most of all, he was extremely proud of his family, and by reading the following list, you’ll understand why:

John is predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Mary Wierdo Scranton, his son, Joseph, his brother Raymond, his sisters Shirley Weiss and Patricia Piegaro, and his son-in-law, Lawrence O’Donnell.

He is survived by and eternally proud of his wife, Joyce Sendach Scranton, his 4 sons: John Jr. and his wife Lisa, Raymond and his wife Darla, Michael and his wife Patty, and Brian and his wife Sue, his 4 daughters; Susanne O’Donnell, Barbara and her husband Nicholas, Elana and her husband Ted, and Mary and her husband Jimmy, his 2 sisters; Sister Marion Scranton SC and Sister Judith Scranton SSJ, his 16 grandchildren; Alexa, Raymond, Michael, Matthew, Nicole, Jennifer, Larry, Luke, Nicholas, Alyssa, Matthew, Timmy, Tommy, Alexis, Madison, and Sophia, his 6 great grandchildren, his former wife, Mary “Mimi” Marino, many nieces, nephews and a long, long line of Wierdos.

Funeral services will take place on Sunday, November 3, 2019, 11:30am at Maxwell-Tobie Funeral Home, 573 Mill Creek Road, Manahawkin, NJ 08050. Shiva will be observed at the family residence on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, November 3, 4 & 5, at 7pm.
