William Hester

William J. Hester, age 87, of Waretown, NJ, formerly of Cranford, NJ, passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2022.

Born in Boston, MA., he lived in Cranford for 40 years prior to Waretown where he resided for the last year and a half. William was a graduate of Northeastern University, Boston, MA where he earned his bachelor's degree. He served in the US Army in the Army R.O.T.C. Instructor Group from 1958 to 1959.  Prior to his retirement, he was employed for 64 years by IBM, working last in Dayton, NJ as a Human Resource Manager. He was a 50 year 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #2061, Sayreville, NJ. He was a long-time parishioner of St. Helen’s Church, Westfield, NJ where he served on the Board of Directors, a member of the advisory board of the recreation committee, Cranford, NJ, a long-time board member of the Cranford Swim Club, and long-time president of the Spring Gardens Social Activities Club.

William is predeceased by his parents, John F. and Mary (McGrail) Hester.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine M. (Maher) Hester, his two daughters, Colleen Nauta and her husband Patrick, and Kathleen Hester, his son, William Hester and his wife Katie, his sister, Mary Rufiange, his brother, John Hester and his wife Marie, his four grandchildren; Sean, Shannon, Sierra and Alexa, as well as his many loving nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will take place on Thursday, August 25th, 2022, from 4pm to 7pm at Maxwell-Tobie Funeral Home, 573 Mill Creek Road, Manahawkin, NJ 08050. Additional visitation will be held on Friday, August 26, from 10am to 11am at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 4700 Long Beach Blvd., Brant Beach, NJ 08008. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated immediately following visitation at 11:00am. Interment will follow at New Calvary Cemetery, Sayreville, NJ.
