Phyllis M. Walker

Phyllis (Philomena) Marie Walker, (nee Matarazzo), 91, of Manahawkin, passed away on November 30, 2023 at Brandywine Assisted Living in Mahwah surrounded by her children.

Phyllis was born on July 12, 1932 to Rose and Carmen Matarazzo, in Hoboken. After graduating high school, Phyllis married (Deacon) George L. Walker, who also lived on Jackson Street in Hoboken. Together they went on to have eight children, four boys; George K Thomas, Brian and Sean Walker, and four girls; Karen Walker, Erin Polakowski, Regina Pennabere and Sheila Greenberg. Phyllis was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, George L. and her sister Mildred Swarts. She is survived by her eight children, ten grandchildren, four great grandchildren, her sister Jeanette Kloepping and numerous nieces and nephews.

In 1996, Phyllis and Deacon George retired and moved from Rutherford to Manahawkin, NJ. She was an active member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, in Brant Beach, NJ. Here she served many roles including Eucharist Minister. Deacon George and Phyllis were devoted to the St. Francis community, and spent many countless hours with their parish friends. Phyllis was employed by the archdiocese of Newark in several capacities. She held positions as the CYO Youth director as well as working in the chancellery office. The dedication to her religion never failed to shine through, even in her occupation.
