Lorraine Harriet Weland (Osekowski)

Lorraine Harriet Weland (nee Osekowski), age 82, of Waretown, NJ, passed away peacefully with her family in her presence on January 22, 2021.

Visitation will be from 4PM to 8PM on Monday, January 25, 2021, at the Maxwell-Tobie Funeral Home, 573 Mill Creek Road, Manahawkin, NJ.  Funeral services will be held at 10AM on Tuesday, January 26, 2021, at St. Mary’s Church, 747 West Bay Ave, Barnegat, NJ.  Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, 50 McLean Boulevard, Paterson, NJ.

Lorraine was born in Paterson, NJ, to Walter and Agnes Osekowski on July 13, 1938.  She was a graduate of Central High School in Paterson, NJ, received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Paterson State Teachers College, Wayne, NJ, and a Master’s Degree in Education from Columbia University, New York, NY.

She married her beloved husband of 58-years, Arthur Weland, on July 8, 1962 in Paterson, NJ. After living in Paterson, NJ for the first 8-years of their marriage, in 1970 they moved to Waldwick, NJ to raise their family.  They moved to Williamsburg, VA in 1997 where they spent 9 happy years.  In 2006, they relocated back to Waretown in their home state of NJ.

Lorraine started her career teaching elementary school children at School 28 in the Paterson school system.  She worked briefly in the Haledon, NJ public school system before taking time off from her career to raise her 4 children.  She resumed her career around 1980 taking a position at St. Anne’s School in Fair Lawn, NJ where she taught 7th and 8th grade students until her retirement from teaching in 1997.  Throughout her teaching career she was involved with her students in many extra-curricular activities, such as theater productions and educational travel/trips.  In Williamsburg, VA, she worked at an educational resource retail store until her final retirement from work in 2006.

Throughout her life Lorraine was an active person, living life to its fullest, enjoying time with family and friends, giving her time and energy selflessly to many organizations and causes.  She was kind and generous, always thinking of others, making those people close to her feel special.  She was active in and dedicated to the Roman Catholic Church, serving as a Eucharistic Minister for many years at multiple parishes, teaching CCD, and performing in church choirs (she loved to sing and had a beautiful voice).  She was a Cub Scout Den leader for her sons and was a Girl Scout leader for her daughters.  She loved physical activities, participating in bowling leagues, bocce leagues, and for a short time golf leagues (a game she took up in her 70’s).  She enjoyed playing all sorts of games with family and friends: bunco, pinochle, Yahtzee, and Rummikub in particular.  In retirement at the Greenbriar Oceanaire community she took advantage of the many opportunities to participate in clubs and activities such as stage productions, ethnic clubs, and the Do Nothing Club.  She was an avid reader, especially historic fiction novels by authors such as James Michener.  She loved crossword puzzles and expressed her artistic talents through ceramics.  She was an especially great cook and loved to entertain and host parties with family and friends.  She loved to travel, visiting all of the 50 States, a number of Caribbean islands, and many nations around the world.  Lorraine had a true passion for life!

Lorraine is preceded in death by her parents and her beloved sister and brother in-law, Irene and Vincent Stuckas.

Lorraine is survived by her husband Arthur, her 4 children (Lisa, Alan, Linda and Michael), one daughter in-law and one son in-law (Nancy and David), 4 grandchildren (Zachary, Andrew, Ethan, and Henry), and numerous nieces/nephews/cousins/sister in-laws and other family and friends who she loved dearly.

Pallbearers will be her sons Alan and Michael Weland, her son in-law David Bockoven, her grandsons Zachary and Andrew Weland, and her grand-nephew Ian Keller.

Lorraine was a generous person throughout her life, donating to many charitable organizations.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one of her favorite charities:  St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

The family of Lorraine wishes to extend our sincere thanks to all that provided support in her time of need.
