Lester “Les” Horbacz passed away at his home on Tuesday, September 19, 2023. He was 74 years old.
Born on November 2, 1948, in Jerey City, NJ, Les was the son of the late Edward and Mary Horbacz. Les worked at Best Foods/Mueller’s Macaroni for 24 years. Upon the company’s closure, he moved onto American Self Storage, until he retired 4 years ago. Les always had a dream of owning his own business. When the opportunity arose, he and his wife, became the owners of Do Me A Flavor Ice Cream shop in Carteret for 9 years. Les met his wife Patricia, the love of his life, in 1972, and they married on July 11, 1974. Together, they raised 4 children.
Les loved crabbing, a hobby which he started with his father. He continued this tradition with his children and nephews, whom he loved like they were his children, then passed onto his grandchildren. In the Horbacz Family, by the time you were 4, everyone knew how to step on and pick up a crab. When he wasn’t crabbing with his family, coaching softball/baseball or bowling with his kids, or scooping ice cream at his shop, he was watching his favorite sports teams play. Les was an avid fan of the NY Mets, NJ Devils, and the NY Giants.
He is survived by his wife Patricia Horbacz (Dargan), his children, Tina-Marie Kadi (Arpad), Tracey Clark (Kevin), Kimberly Carroll (the late Jimmy Carroll), and Edward Horbacz (Jaclyn), his 8 grandchildren Amanda Talbert, Alex Smith, Christian Kadi, Tyler Kadi, Victoria Horbacz, Valentina Horbacz, Kaylee Carroll, Domenic Horbacz, and 2 great grandchildren, Olivia, and Noah Talbert.
If you knew Les, you know how much he disliked any kind of formal attire. Never wore a tie and ALWAYS wore a hat, “it keeps my head warm”. Please feel free to wear your favorite sports team jersey and hat. Services will be held on Monday, September 25, 2023, from 4pm to 8pm at Maxwell-Tobie Funeral Home, 573 Mill Creek Road, Manahawkin, NJ 08050. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00am on Tuesday, September 26 at Saint Mary Of The Pines Church, 100 Bishop Way, Manahawkin NJ 08050. Cremation will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Ashley Lauren Foundation for Children Fighting Cancer, 617 Union Ave Building 3 Suite 27, Brielle NJ 08730. Venmo: @TheAShleyLauren Foundation.
