John E. “Hatch” Hiros

John E. Hiros, a resident of New Lisbon for five decades, passed away Sunday with his caring family by his side at the age of 86. Born and raised in Cleveland to John C. and Viola his parents. After a stellar High School career in football, he was recruited to play on the collegiate level and attended Baldwin Wallace (BW) College in Berea Ohio. A member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, he majored in history andmaintains a school record for catching three touchdowns in one game. Also, at BW he would bump into a cute upper-class woman named Annie whom he married in 1961 and would spend every day with for the rest of his life.
Continuing his education at Glassboro State College he earned a master’s degree in environmental educationthat allowed him to enjoy a diverse career.
His professional career included: Executive Director at the Conservation and Environmental Science Center, Headmaster at Atlantic City Friends School, CEO Milford Environmental Center, Natural Lands Trust, College Professor at BCC and acquisition and operation of the family business, and Bung’s Tavern.
A true man for all seasons he was an accomplished outdoorsman, dog trainer, waterfowler, environmentalist, avid reader, builder, fisherman, and sailor… Through hard work and perseverance there was little he couldn’t accomplish. Hatch taught us that knowledge was power. He let his children grow and develop confidence through hard work, lifelongexperiences and wonderful adventures.
Married to and survived by his loving wife Ann of 64years, sons: John (Jennifer), Christopher, and Bill (Jennifer). Grandchildren Christopher (Jennifer), Hunter, Courtney and Nick. Great grandson James David.
To quote one of his favorite authors and the last line in a beloved book written by James Fenimore Cooper, “He is Uncas my son. Tell them to be patient and ask death for speed; for they are all there but one – “Hatch” Last of the Mohicans.
Please join friends and family Saturday June 21st one p.m. to celebrate Dad’s life at Billy Boys Tavern Rt. 72 at the Four Mile Circle.
