Janet Papovitch Costa, of Manahawkin, New Jersey, died on July 13, 2026 at the age of 82.
Born and raised in Hastings‑on‑Hudson, NY, she was the daughter of Jennie and John Kupchok and graduated from Hastings High School in 1962.
Janet was the devoted mother of Walter Charlz Papovitch and Wayne Papovitch , and the proud grandmother of Giordona Papovitch and Mylo Papovitch. She was the beloved wife of Victor Costa. Janet was the sister of John Kope (deceased), Paul Kupchok, and Debra Kupchok.
Earlier in life, she was married to Walter Papovitch, with whom she shared many years and raised her sons.
A lifelong animal lover, Janet had a special affection for dogs and cared for many throughout her life. She fed the birds outside her window each morning and looked after the feral cats in her neighborhood, making sure they were never forgotten. She spent time volunteering at her local animal shelter when she was able.
Janet enjoyed walks on the beaches of LBI, near her home, searching for treasures — sea glass, shells, and gifts the ocean left behind. Her home reflected her warmth and her creativity, filled with the unique pieces she discovered in thrift stores. She took pleasure in the beauty that flowers and plants added to her home.
Janet’s family and friends will remember her for her gentle nature, her friendliness towards others and the way she created a sense of home wherever she went. Her presence will be deeply missed, and her love will continue in the lives of those she touched.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, where family and friends can come together to honor her memory.
