Francis Patrick Sullivan - August 14, 1935 – September 5, 2026
Francis Sullivan, 91, most recently of Toms River, New Jersey, passed away on Saturday, September 5, 2026.
Born in Montclair, New Jersey, Frank was the son of William and Louise Sullivan and the third of their five children. He grew up in Bloomfield, New Jersey, where he attended St. Thomas Catholic School through eighth grade and graduated from Bloomfield High School. He went on to Cornell University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, and later earned a Master of Business Administration from Rutgers University.
Frank worked as an electrical engineer for several companies. Later, he joined AT&T Bell Laboratories in Northern New Jersey, where he became a technical writer. Although he was accomplished professionally, it was his family, his faith, and especially his love of music that brought him some of his greatest joy.
Frank married Judith Ruckstuhl on October 18, 1969. They lived in Greenwich Village, New York, during the first year of their marriage before moving to Basking Ridge, New Jersey, where they raised their three sons, Brian, Dennis, and Michael. Later in life, Frank and Judy moved to Manahawkin, New Jersey, living near the water, as they had always dreamed.
Frank was a devoted husband who adored Judy and cherished the life they shared. As a father, he was always present and deeply involved in the lives of his sons. He treasured every opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren, who knew him as “Papa.”
Frank was a gifted singer with a beautiful Irish tenor voice. In college, he sang in the Cornell University Glee Club. During his younger adult years, he sang barbershop music in quartets and with the Dapper Dans of Harmony in Livingston, New Jersey. He was also a cantor and sang in church choirs throughout much of his life, performing at Sunday Masses, funerals, and weddings.
Attending Midnight Mass at Christmas became a cherished family tradition, with Frank singing the solo to “O Holy Night” with the choir. He always hit the high note perfectly, and his sweet voice was a gift to his family and to all who heard him.
Later, Frank became involved in community theater, performing in shows such as Guys and Dolls and Brigadoon. More than any of these performances, however, Frank enjoyed singing with Judy. Judy played the ukulele while they sang together, creating sweet music and sharing a beautiful expression of the love and companionship that defined their marriage.
Frank was also a passionate New York Giants fan. One of the great highlights of his life came when he and Judy traveled to Pasadena, California, to attend Super Bowl XXI, where they watched the Giants defeat the Denver Broncos and win their first Super Bowl championship.
Above all else, Frank will be remembered as kind, tender-hearted, and a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
Frank was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judith Sullivan; his parents, William and Louise Sullivan; his brother, William Sullivan; and his sisters, Marjorie Sullivan and Eleanor Barry.
He is survived by his sister, Louise Shepherd; his three sons, Brian Sullivan and his wife, Christie, Dennis Sullivan, and Michael Sullivan; and his grandchildren, Jack Sullivan, Brendan Sullivan, and Julia Sullivan.
