Doris Schmid

Doris Jennifer Schmid (née Griffith), 94, of Long Beach Township, New Jersey passed away peacefully at home on Monday, April 13, 2020.

Born in Reading, Pennsylvania on October 18, 1925, Doris and her family moved to Staten Island when she was a young child.  An honor-roll student, she graduated Curtis High School in 1943 and accepted a position at a bank in New York City.  Doris attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School and met the love of her life, Chris Schmid, at a church dance.  They married on July 29, 1950 and shortly thereafter she left her job in banking and began working at Chris’ Flower Shop.  They worked side-by-side for 36 years.  In 1984 they retired and moved to their summer home in the High Bar Harbor section of Long Beach Township.

Doris was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, sang in the church choir, and was a member of the Ladies Guild.  In addition to spending time with family and friends, and vacationing in the Florida Keys, Doris enjoyed baking, knitting, sewing, swimming, boating, fishing, crabbing and clamming.  She was well known for making the best clam chowder.

Doris was predeceased by her beloved husband Chris of 67 years.  Doris is survived by her sons Chris, Charles (wife Valerie), and Kenneth (wife Arlene), daughters Susan Folinus (husband Robert), and Barbara Annarumma (husband Salvatore), and nine grandchildren, Ryan, Danielle, Jeffrey, Kevin, Kenneth, Chris, Joseph, Lisa and Bethany, and eight great-grandchildren, Sarah, Kyle, Caleb, Lucas, Jace, Austin, Colby and Clara, and their long-time caregiver Grace, as well as many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

A private burial service will be held at Moravian Cemetery in Staten Island. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Doris’ memory to Zion Lutheran Church, PO Box 152, Barnegat Light, New Jersey 08006.
